Victorian Week has started with a bang, with virtually all of the children and staff dressed in Victorian costumes. We had some strict teachers on patrol around the school (even stricter than normal) checking for clean hands etc. In fact I have to say, while the behaviour at Chatsworth is always extremely good - it was definitely outstanding yesterday - nobody dared speak!
Things are getting back to normal today. The children are still sitting in rows and working hard, but not in silence. Miss Hurley and Miss Pembroke took Sunflower class down to the southern hall for their Victorian tea. The children loved drinking tea out of old fashioned china cups and eating cake made by the older children using a Victorian recipe. I had a sample straight from the oven and it was delicious.
You might not know that we are developing our Food Technology curriculum at the moment. Mrs Frosdick is working with children across the school and the results so far have been very tasty. We have a child height kitchen for groups to use, although we are still saving up for more appropriate tables to put in the room. Mrs Frosdick takes groups of between eight and fifteen children (depending on age) and the children follow a carefully designed programme to develop their FT skills.
Has your child commented on FT lessons? What are your thoughts on FT? Please let me know.
The smell of baking around school has been absolutely delicious! I have seen lots of children enjoying cups of tea with their cake today - what a treat!
ReplyDeleteI liked Victorian day because we got to get the experiance how poor and rich victorian children felt at school.I liked it when we got to write in nice, fluint victorian handwriting on the slates. It was really fun i loved it.
ReplyDeleteI am delighted to hear you enjoyed Monday, Maggie. Have you had your Victorian tea experience yet?
ReplyDeleteWe had our tea and cake on Wednesday and it was really delicous, I really like the raisins inside the cake. I also liked the tea because it was with milk and i normally have it without milk. It had a strange light brown colour. I completely loved the Victorian Tea!
DeleteMr Wright Victorian day was one of the best days of my life. It was so cool. It was a really good experience writing really curly, fluid and slowly because it made me notice how to make your writing neat. We haven't had our Victorian tea yet but i bet it's delicious. When we had our Victorian assembly i noticed the horrible punishments the children would get like:
ReplyDeletefinger-slots
the cane
something to make you sit up right
and only a few other disgusting punishments.
It is a good job we don't have punishments like that today, Jack. I believe being caned was VERY painful. You will enjoy the tea and cake - Mrs Frosdick has given me several slices of cake this week and they were all delicious.
ReplyDeleteI am Sahnavi from olympic park and I loved victorian day because you get to dress up in victorian times, you get to sit in reall desks.I was really scared when the inspector showed us the back board, fiddly fingers fang and the cane,I was almost shocked when the inspector hit the girl who stayed at home hor cleaning with the cane. The bad thing is that I'm dont like egg so i didnt eat the cake in victorian tea time, also the teachers were very strict.
ReplyDeletePeople kept telling that my dress was part of halloween but i was dressed up as Queen Victoria.Miss Cope acted like a real victorian teacher and said we would get real punishments but she really didnt mean it.I'm glad that we wont get bad punishments in our school
Hello Sahnavi, what an excellent idea, dressing up as Queen Victoria. Did Miss Cope take any photographs? I would like to put one on our Victorian display.
ReplyDeleteHi Mr Wright.I cant wait today (Friday) because im having a Victorian tea party!
ReplyDeleteMiss Maloney has a been a very good Victorian teacher. In class my hairband fell off and landed on the floor but i didnt realize ,Then Miss Maloney said to me no hairband on my lovely floor. Then when it was the first day if Victorian Day everyone kept laughing and Miss Maloney said "No laughing!".I really enjoyed Victorian Day
and im sure everyone else did.
Abeer, let me know what you think of the tea and cake. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI really loved the cake and tea!.
DeleteLast Friday, I enjoyed the Victorian Tea. All the boys and girls finished at the same time, well almost the same time. Some punishment were:
ReplyDeleteFinger Stoppers
The log
The can/cane
The Cage
And many more Vile Punishments.
When we were doing Victorian Handwriting, I really liked how they did the A`s, I liked them so much I sometimes do them in my normal writing!
I really liked Victorian week, It was my first Victorian week in this school
Hello Mr. Wright, I have left the school now, but I keep checking chatsworths website. I remember the Victorian fornight that we had when I was at chatsworth.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hope everyone likes this one as well.
I hope you're enjoying your new school and have made lots of new friends!

I loved Victorian week it was amazing
ReplyDeleteWishing You a Very Happy and Prosperous Diwali.
ReplyDeleteThank-you Bhargavi, did you enjoy the fireworks?
DeleteTo Mr Wright,
ReplyDeleteYou are a great head teacher but on Victorian week you were a even better chimney sweep. What job would you choose in Victorian times? I would choose a house maid because it wouldn't be as dangerous as the other job there were. I think everyone should comment what job they would choose.
Thank-you Dilara. Being a house maid would be safe, but very hard work. I think I would like to have been a wealthy Victorian gentleman, but in reality I suppose I would have done the same job as my great grandfather, who lived in Vicotrian times. He was a coachman for Lord Daresbury.
Deletewow so interesting.
DeleteHira, were there any punishments from Victorian times that we could use today?
ReplyDeleteI will, I hope you enjoy your half-term too!
ReplyDeleteI thought the tea was nasty but the cake was perfect.I wish I had some more cake though!
ReplyDeleteMr Wright you were great during Victorian week. My name is Crystal and I am in Downing street class and my teacher is miss Joliffe. have a great weekend .
ReplyDeleteHello Mr. Wright! Victorian week was great, especially the afternoon. Things turned back to normal after lunchtime, meaning it wasn't so strict anymore. You looked great in your chimney sweep costume and I didn't know that the life of a chimney sweep was so horrible. Anyway, I baked sponge cakes with Mrs Frosdick and while you were in France, I made vegetable pasties with all new people for food technology. Finally, the Victorian tea was great! All except from the tea which tasted like horrible water, but at least the cake was nice! Since it was Victorian tea, I put my little finger up as I drank the tea, just to be posh.
ReplyDeleteYves, I think you would make a great Victorian gentleman!
DeleteTyler, your right the tea wasn't as I expected though the cake was AMAZING!!
ReplyDeleteAs its my last year here (sadly) that was my last Victorian Tea....
I do not want to be a bad victorian child.
ReplyDeleteBadly behaved Victorian children received some horrible punishments, so I think it was much better to be polite and well behaved, Jastej.
DeleteThat Victorian Tea was beyond good I want to thank Mr Wright for hosting that.
